So this is one of the tracks I heard during my first year at college in Montreal that kinda formed a lot of my musical taste, Ballistic Brothers – “Blacker”. A dope rolling jazz breakbeat, grooving-as-hell bassline, and that dope sample:
“There are a lot of comments about…um….who’s blacker than you are, blacker than she is…blacker than thou”.
Sort of speaks to a lot of the insecurities I felt growing up, being a black (African) kid who listened to a lot of pop and alternative rock, just as much hip hop and RnB, was part of the “black kids who talk like white kids” club, and having to confront this wild identity issues mixing African-ness, American society, Black American society, and white euro-centric society all together.
Truth is, this track spoke to me on all those levels, so it’s was pretty dope when I first heard it on a French dance magazine compilation cd.
Enjoy!
