Come Check me out at Wonderland Ballroom this thursday!

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Hey, I’m filling in this Thursday at Wonderland Ballroom with my man VJ OsCool. He’ll be bringing the old skool music video vibes during the happy hour, and I’ll be lacing the spot with my usual hip-hop/dancehall/electro/dubby business…you know, the good ish!

Formative Songs for a Positive Today and Tommorow #8258276 – Ballistic Brothers “Blacker”

Friday, March 13th, 2009

So this is one of the tracks I heard during my first year at college in Montreal that kinda formed a lot of my musical taste, Ballistic Brothers – “Blacker”. A dope rolling jazz breakbeat, grooving-as-hell bassline, and that dope sample:

“There are a lot of comments about…um….who’s blacker than you are, blacker than she is…blacker than thou”.

Sort of speaks to a lot of the insecurities I felt growing up, being a black (African) kid who listened to a lot of pop and alternative rock, just as much hip hop and RnB, was part of the “black kids who talk like white kids” club, and having to confront this wild identity issues mixing African-ness, American society, Black American society, and white euro-centric society all together.

Truth is, this track spoke to me on all those levels, so it’s was pretty dope when I first heard it on a French dance magazine compilation cd.

Enjoy!

What’s hot in 2009 – Whitest Boy Alive

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009
Whitest Boy Alive...Norwegian and very white....but still cool ;)

Love the band name, fronted by Erlend Oye (who my girlfriend loves…aw who am I kidding, I love that guy too) and I’m really looking forward to their new album, Rules, that’s out today.

Blogrhythms at Okayplayer.com does a great review here, and since I pretty much suck at writing, I am not going to do a lame attempt at rewriting it, I suggest you pop over and read it there.

What I WILL do is have you take a listen to a few of their tracks at Last.fm. My fave is Fred Falke’s remix of “Golden Cage”, original track from their first album “Dreams”. Spread on toast and enjoy.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs….Zero and More

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Heard the new single “Zero” the other day. I really like it, so here are a few other little bits from the band. Karen O’s got a great voice and I just love the sheer sound and bigness of their music.
